GP Referral Scheme

The GP Referral Scheme allows individuals to seek health and fitness advice from qualified professionals to help them live healthier, more active lives. The scheme not only enables both low and high risk individuals to enjoy a more active lifestyle, but also aids in the rehabilitation of injuries through structured exercise and fitness training.

Individuals who wish to improve their health will firstly need to be referred in writing by either their doctor, medical professional or an appropriate health organisation. Our staff are familiar with the treatment and exercise frameworks ranging from mental health and neurological conditions to cardiovascular and respiratory issues.

A few questions and answers to get the ball rolling…

What happens next?
On the day of your first visit you will meet the GP Referral consultant to discuss your medical history, talk about why you have been referred. They will briefly outline your goals and address any concerns or answer general questions you may
have. You will also be physically assessed so the consultant can ascertain your physical readiness for exercise and your individual risk category. The consultant will then arrange a time with you to run through the relevant programme for your specific needs.

A typical programme will include a six week plan of exercises either based in the swimming pool, gym or a combination of both depending on your needs. Upon each visit the consultant is available to monitor progress and give support and advice.

What if I’ve never used a gym before?
No experience is necessary! We offer support, guidance and encouragement as well as expert advice and assessments to ensure anyone can feel confident of being able to achieve their goals.

What to wear?
Being comfortable is essential whilst exercising. A T-shirt, shorts or tracksuit trousers and trainers are all that are necessary.

The sports centre staff are trained in the
use of defibrillation equipment and First Aid.
